Selena Gomez' "Come & Get It" - Single Review

In the battle of former Disney channel starlets turned pop icons, Selena Gomez comes out of the gate after Demi Lovato with the lead single off her upcoming summer 2013 album, her first without her supporting band, The Scene. "Come & Get It", the Stargate-produced single influenced by the artist's heavily publicized split with Justin Beiber, is a departure from anything Gomez has released before. For those looking for a pop track similar to "Round & Round" or "Love You Like A Love Song", you will be somewhat let down and disappointed, but the new song will certainly please the young artist's devoted fan base and attract a new audience who is waiting for the woman underneath to burst out of her child shell. Gone are the teenager lyrics, replaced with more sexual innuendos and a seductive vocal performance. I feel old now.

"Come & Get It", and the rest of the music to be featured on Gomez' "solo" album was said to be influenced by Britney Spears and Skrillex. It may sound like a weird mix of inspirations, but both can be heard on this new pop track. The lyrics, "when you're ready, come and get it", paint a "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" picture that Spears made her own a few years back. While the songwriting is something different, it is far from the highlight of the track, that recognition goes to the production and supporting beats found on the tribal-inspired song. Electronic qualities found on music form Skrillex can be quickly heard here and they go with the overall vibe and feel. On paper it may not have sounded convincing, but it all comes together nicely.

As a fan of Miss Gomez, my expectations for the new single were high. Unfortunately, all those expectations were not met here. The track is good, but it is not show-stopping or even great. I enjoy the direction the singer is taking her music, I like that she is trying something new, but it could have been so much better. Selena's voice is maturing just as she is, although it's not at its full potential yet, the production has me dancing around my room, and her new attitude is something worth keeping an eye on. "Come & Get It" falters a bit when it comes to the actual words Selena is singing. The albums from Selena, Demi and Miley are career making moments. Demi's "Heart Attack" blew me away, Selena's is just good and we are all waiting for Miss Cyrus' next offering. What do you think of the Texas-native's new single?
