Post apocalyptic is the nature of this game with you will be playing as the main character named Artyom. You are placed in the battle ground when the game starts. You will meet a ranger who gives you his story and how he is going in to destroy the creatures called dark ones which are threatening the human kind. Then he tells you to get away from there and contact the authorities if he does not return. Then you must travel through environments that are under soviets and Nazis influence and also are threatened by the creatures. Once he comes out of the damned land he meets with another ranger who agrees to help him and tell him he knows a way that can destroy the dark ones. Then Artyom and other rangers form a group and start to prepare to destroy these dangerous creatures. They are to use missiles which they activate from the command center.
